PenguinsPenguins are aquatic, flightless birds, native to the southernhemisphere and predominantly found in the Antarctic. On land theyjust waddle along or toboggan on their bellies, but once in thewater they become dynamic, speedy swimmers feeding on krill, fish, squid and other sea creatures. The largest species is the EmperorPenguin with a height of around 1.2 metres and weighing up to 45kg. The smallest is the Little Blue, a mere 30 cm high and onlyabout 1.5 kg. As there are no land predators in Antarctica, penguins seem to have little fear of humans and can be approachedas close as about 3 metres. And in a zoo they are perfectlyprepared to parade, as these photos show.
Clouds-Sunsets gallery 1.0

Clouds/sunsetsSunset, as the sun slowly disappears below the horizon in thewest, is often a more brightly coloured and magical scene than asunrise. It provides some spectacular images, with a blaze ofvibrant orange and red hues. The atmosphere responds to exposure tothe sun in a number of ways during the daylight hours, and theretends to be more dust in the lower atmosphere at the end of the daythan at the beginning. Clouds too can offer images with fascinatingforms, from dark, threatening storm clouds to bright, fluffy, cumulus clouds that form vertically, adding an interesting touch toan otherwise cloudless sky. But add broken cloud to a sunset andthe magic is doubled.

Nature’s ice art in Geneva and VersoixThese photographs were taken in Geneva and nearby Versoix onLakeGeneva in southern Switzerland, in February 2012 during one ofthecoldest spells for decades. The freezing temperatures notonlycaused chaos on the roads but also posed many motorists theproblemof actually getting into their parked cars. Pedestrians alsoneededto be surefooted to get about. It was not only the extremecold butalso the strong, cutting “Bise” wind that created theArticconditions that allowed Mother Nature to create suchincredible icesculptures. It’s such a shame that they aretransient. The first 54photographs were taken in Geneva, theremainder in Versoix.
